Rising Star Considerations for the Nominee

The MCA (Management Communication Association) is an exclusive group of MBA-level Communication faculty from top-tier business schools.  We interact mostly electronically through the year and convene annually for a conference.  The group embodies “exclusivity” only in that we all very much value the close-knit, interactive, contributory collegiality of a relatively small group.  Every year, current members nominate individuals for membership, individuals we call “Rising Stars.”

The nomination process might seem nerve-wracking, but the process has evolved–after 4+ years of debate and discussion among members–into an experiential, democratic and transparent routine. The Rising Star should know that she or he will experience no hazing : ) and will, instead, experience a wonderful weekend with colleagues, a weekend as much for the Rising Star to check out MCA as for MCA to check out the Rising Star.

Rising Stars, to be eligible for consideration for membership, must

      • Have demonstrated excellence in MBA-level Communication teaching
      • Bring innovative approaches or perspective to the MCA (Rising Stars can be early or later in their careers)
      • Secure the support of a current member (after significant interaction/cooperation)
      • Attend the conference in the same academic year as the nomination occurs (conferences occur in May or June)
      • Present at the conference (nothing like a ‘paper-reading’ presentation; details will follow after nomination)
      • Consider her or his perception of ‘fit’ with the group (you size us up too!)
      • Rest assured that the process (and group) is collegial and supportive even though we strive to remain a close-knit, interactive, collaborative group.

Rising Stars might be eligible for a subsidy to cover some conference travel or registration expenses (Rising Stars should look first to institutional/departmental funding as Rising Star funding varies each year)

The Current Member who nominates the Rising Star will confer with the Rising Star throughout the nomination process, a process which runs, approximately, along this timeline:

  • October: Rising Star Nominations
  • November and December: Nomination review by Membership Committee
  • February: Rising Stars notified and invited to the conference
  • May or June: That year’s conference at which Rising Stars will present, meet attending members, size us up
  • Conference + 30 Days: All member voting on Rising Star nominees

Current Members should only nominate individuals whom the Current Member knows well and knows has significant potential to contribute to the MCA in meaningful ways.
